Its moat is not just the code (which is open source and based on the Substrate framework) but the 'data gravity' and network effects inherent in a live blockchain ecosystem. With nearly 1,000 stars and a very high fork-to-star ratio (382 forks), it serves as a critical reference implementation for the entire Polkadot ecosystem. It has significant defensibility through established partnerships, TVL (Total Value Locked), and the deep domain expertise required to manage a parachain's economic and governance model. Frontier labs (OpenAI, Anthropic) pose virtually zero risk here as decentralized L1/L2 infrastructure is outside their core mission. The primary risks are 'ecosystem risk'—the overall adoption of Polkadot relative to Ethereum L2s—and competition from other EVM-compatible parachains like Astar. Platform domination risk is low because Moonbeam is essentially a platform itself.
