Metaplex is the de facto standard for NFTs on Solana. Its defensibility stems from massive network effects and ecosystem lock-in: every major marketplace (Magic Eden, Tensor) and wallet (Phantom, Solflare) is hardcoded to interpret Metaplex metadata standards. While the code is open-source, the 'data gravity' of existing assets and the consensus among ecosystem participants make it nearly impossible to displace. Frontier labs have zero interest in the specific implementation details of Solana-based NFT logic.
